Burning DVD Movies to Regular CDs in VCD Format

Ulead's DVD MovieFactory 4 Disc Creator simplifies the process of burning your favorite full-length DVD movies to regular CDs using your CD writer, in Video CD (VCD) format.

NOTE: These instructions assume you have already downloaded the movie to your computer. If you have not completed this process yet, please refer to the Downloading Movies instructions first and then return to this page.

DOWNLOAD AND INSTALL DVD MOVIE FACTORY

1

Click the link below to download the software to your computer (if you do not already have the software installed):

Click here to download (alternate download)

Once you have saved the installation file to your computer, launch the file to start the installation and follow the few simple steps presented (leaving all defaults will be sufficient).

NOTE: The installation file is approximately 97.9Mb, and therefore may take a while to download, depending on the speed of your Internet connection.

BURN YOUR MOVIE TO A REGULAR CD

2

The splash screen of the Ulead DVD MovieFactory 4 program will look similar to the figure below.

Hover your mouse over the black CD at the top of the screen to reveal the CD burning menu.

Click on the Create Video CD button to start the VCD creation/burning process.

Select VCD or SVCD from the options that appear to the right.

NOTE: Some DVD players do not recognize the higher quality SVCD format...if you burn the movie in SVCD format and it will not play on your DVD player, you can do the process over again selecting VCD.

The Add/Edit Media window will look similar to the figure below.

Click the Add video files button (as shown below) to add the movie you have downloaded.

Navigate to the folder where your movie file is stored, select the movie file and click Open. The amount of space required and used by the movie will be displayed at the bottom of the screen.

NOTE: If you get a message that the file selected is not accessible, Ulead may not recognize the file format. Click here to download and install a video codec pack (keeping all default options during install will be fine)...then go back to the step above and add the file again.

NOTE: If the movie is too large to fit on one regular CD (700 Mb), you will need to either decrease the quality, or split up the video into one or more discs. To split up the video, please refer to step 3 below.

To decrease the video quality, click the Settings button in the toolbar at the bottom of the program.

There are enhanced features you can modify/apply, however to burn the movie as is to a CD, no other options need to be modified.

Click the Next button to proceed. In the next window you can apply different background images and music for the intro screen, however the defaults should suffice.

Click the Next button to go to the Preview screen where you can see how the movie will look once it is burned.

Click the Next button again to get to the start of the burning process. Place a blank CD in your CD writer (we recommend using CD-R discs) and click the Output button (as shown below) to start burning the movie to CD.

The burning process may take several hours, depending on the speed of your computer and CD burner...once the burning is complete, you can drop the CD in your DVD player and as long as your DVD player supports the VCD/SVCD disc format, you can watch the movie on your TV!

SPLITTING THE MOVIE FILE

3

If the movie you are attempting to burn will not fit on one regular CD (700Mb), you will need to split the video onto 2 or more discs. After adding the video file the amount of space required on the disc will be displayed on the bottom of the screen, as shown in the figure below.

Click the Multi-trim Video button (as shown below) to open the window where you will be able to select the portion of the movie to burn.

The Multi-trim Video window will look similar to the figure below.

To select the portion of the movie you want to burn, drag the Jog Bar () to the point where you want the movie to start and click the Set Mark-in button (as shown below).

Now, drag the Jog Bar to the point where you want the portion of the movie to end and click the Set Mark-out button (as shown below).

Click OK to apply and save the changes.

TIP: If you need to split the file into several portions, select exact times (eg. 30 minutes) by clicking on the first set of zeros (00) to the right of the Jog Bar and then start typing the numbers of the time you want to select for the Mark-out.

You should now see the amount of disc space required is below the threshold (as shown in the figure below). If the portion you selected is still to large for the disc, click the Multi-trim Video button again and repeat the procedure selecting a smaller portion.

You can now proceed with the burning process as shown in Step 2.

For the remaining portions of the movie that you need to burn, repeat the procedure starting from Step 2 and in the Multi-trim Video window, set your Mark-in point as the Mark-out point that you selected for the previous disc. Then select your Mark-out point as the end of the movie, or the end of this portion that you need to burn.

Example 1:
Movie length = 1h 14m
Space required on disc = 1.34Gb
Disc 1 = 0-37mins (approx. 670Mb)
Disc 2 = 37-74mins (approx. 670Mb)

Example 2:
Movie length = 1h 28m
Space required on disc = 1.6Gb
Disc 1 = 0-30mins (approx. 547Mb)
Disc 2 = 30-60mins (approx. 547Mb)
Disc 3 = 60-88mins (approx. 510Mb)

NOTE: The times and file sizes are just examples and will vary based on the quality of the movie file that you have downloaded.
